In this absurdist satire, the need to connect with fellow workers does furious battle with the need to protect one's tenuous position in the corporate food chain
October 1st - 24th Exploration: City Site This play probed such far-reaching topics as environmental
responsibility, power in the workplace, and the fate of human relationships in an
increasingly impersonal world. Below the Belt follows the exploits of three
eccentric "checkers" at a nameless factory, as they weigh the desire to connect
with their peers against the desire to heave them off the corporate ladder. We continued to provide our audience with a full sensory experience, staging the show in an unlikely environmental setting. Below the Belt was presented at the San Francisco Art Commission's Exploration: City Site, across from City Hall. You may be familiar with it as the location where the "Burning Man" was displayed in the summer. We are very proud that this show will be the first live performance at the site.
The cast included veterans of past Unconditional
Theatre shows. It featured Paul Lancour, who recently played Carl in The Baltimore
Waltz, Gene Thompson, who originated the role of Bob Packwood in Groping for
Justice, and Chris Kuckenbaker, who spent time trapped inside a trash can in director
John Warren's production of Endgame at EXIT Theatre. Below the Belt was first produced at Actors
Theatre of Louisville's prestigious Humana Festival in 1996, and went to Off-Broadway
shortly thereafter.
