The following is a resolution Supervisor Katz introduced commemorating
the Greensboro Massacre,
which was passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
COMMEMORATING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREENSBORO MASSACRE
AND
DECLARING NOVEMBER 3RD, 1999 GREENSBORO MASSACRE REMEMBRANCE DAY IN SAN
FRANCISCO
WHEREAS, On November 3rd, 1979, a group of anti-Ku Klux Klan
protesters gathered for a peaceful march through the
Morningside-Lincoln Grove neighborhood of Greensboro, NC; and,
WHEREAS, Members of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi party raided
the gathering, opening fire on the marchers from inside pickup trucks,
killing five and wounding eleven; and,
WHEREAS, News of the Greensboro Massacre was swept off the front page
by the taking of hostages in Iran; and,
WHEREAS, Noted playwright Emily Mann, author of the play Execution of
Justice which chronicles the assassinations of Harvey Milk and George
Moscone, has written a new play called Greensboro which recalls the
events surrounding the Massacre in the words of victims, witnesses and
perpetrators; and,
WHEREAS, Unconditional Theater will present the West Coast premiere of
Greensboro at San Francisco’s Center for African and African American
Culture and Art from October 22nd, 1999 to November 20th, 1999; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the City and County of San Francisco commemorates the
20th anniversary of the Greensboro Massacre and declares November 3rd,
1999 Greensboro Massacre Remembrance Day in San Francisco.
